Silverweed is a member of the Rose family and its Latin name Potentilla reflects the powerful, 'potent' healing affects attributed to the herbal medicines produced from this often overlooked plant.
Anserina derives from the Latin anser, meaning goose, and this name was probably used due to the fact it is a favourite food of geese.
However, it has also been referred to as argentina, and the Latin argent, meaning silver, is certainly more descriptive of the plant's appearance. The plants, with frond like silvery-green leaves, downy and silky underneath, rapidly spread along the ground by sending out runners, red in colour, and new roots and shoots are formed. Bright yellow five petal flowers are thrust up from the foliage on single stems, radiating sunshine.
Roasted, boiled or raw, the rootstock of Silverweed has been vital for many European, Native American and Chinese people. The simple Silverweed roots kept people alive when no other food was available, especially prior to the introduction of potatoes.
Many people overlook the simplistic beauty of Silverweed and proceed to tramp over it whilst on country rambles, oblivious of the 'little powerful one'. Perhaps if they knew of Silverweed's use in the prevention of blisters, they would stop, line their boots with the downy leaves and offer thanks!
Another truly remarkable plant is SEA ROCKET, which survives the harshest of conditions and successfully colonises areas of barren sand along the coastline, just above the high tide mark. Firstly the plant secures itself in the shifting sands with a long taproot, before creating a complex network of roots to ensure its stability and survival. With succulent leaves and growing low to the ground. Sea Rocket is perfectly adapted to the lashings of salt spray and the harsh abrasive action of the blowing sand.
Most remarkable of all is the ingenious seedpod, which is composed of two parts. The lower part is perfect for floatation. Cork-like in composition, it breaks off and bobs away on the tide. The upper part remains on the plant, thus ensuring the plant will continue to thrive. Even when it is completely covered in sand, new growth is guaranteed. Eventually, some of the 'launched' seeds will establish themselves on distant shores, ensuring the continued existence of the species.
